Drum Lessons (now in Stanmore!) with Mike Quigley

Hi – my name’s Mike Quigley, and I’m a drummer and educator based in Stanmore in Sydney’s Inner West. The purpose of this blog is to describe my approach to private drum tuition, and provide contact details for anyone who’s interested in investigating further.

I initially wrote this blog in 2010, and it has been updated in June 2015.
I studied drums and percussion throughout high school before joining the Australian Wind Orchestra and studying Jazz at Sydney’s Conservatorium Of Music. Since then I have performed and recorded with numerous projects spanning jazz, ‘indie’ rock and metal styles of music. Music has taken me to many different parts of the globe, and exposed me to an extraordinary variety of cultures and experiences. My outlook on life has been thoroughly enriched by my involvement in the art of music.
I have also taught drums and percussion in a variety of schools and colleges, as well as directing student ensembles both in schools and in community settings. Since 2011 I have been teaching at the Australian Institute Of Music in Surry Hills – teaching drums, performance studies, masterclasses and ensemble classes.

My teaching experiences have enriched my life enormously, and I’m grateful for the relationships I’ve enjoyed throughout my life with my teachers and students – relationships that often continue well after lessons have concluded, as our musical journeys continue to cross paths.

My approach to private teaching is centered on my student’s personal musical interests – the music that they enjoy listening to and feel that they relate to. I find that we are always able to explore the fundamentals of technique, understanding musical notation, aural skills and co-ordination through the study of repertoire that appeals to the student. I encourage the student to create their own ‘playlist’ of songs that appeal to them. Together we assess what skills we need to develop, and which concepts we need to understand more thoroughly to improve our drumming, and how to work towards our goals as musicians in an inspired and comprehensive way.

I can be contacted on my mobile – 0403 136 397, or via email – quigspeak@hotmail.com

Rates (as of June 2015) are $35/half an hour, and $60/ 1 hour.

Thanks for visiting! – mike.
